COCKERMOUTH LIVE! COCKERMOUTH SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCE CLUB

Cockermouth Live! was such a success with the town looking its best in wonderful sunshine under a perfect sky. The Scottish dancers were out in force despite the heat, dancing in Christ Church Hall and making good use of the lovely new floor.

The team preparing for the White Rose Festival in Leeds, performed the medley of strathspey and reel McDonald of Keppoch and the reel Grimaldi 700. The men looked cool in their white shirts and kilts, while the ladies were rather too warm in their black outfits with yellow and tartan sashes. Quinn demonstrated the Highland Fling several times and was hottest of all!

A group of the dancers went on to dance even more in the evening at Windermere School, at the Lakes Ball, where George Meikle and his band from Dumfries were playing. Despite the heat, they danced and enjoyed a delicious supper in the spectacular surroundings.

Scottish dancing is an activity for all ages, providing exercise, good company and lots of fun, as well as keeping the brain active. Why not join us when we start classes again in September?

Most people are aware that loneliness can be a problem for older people. When Sarah Bromiley of Age UK and Allerdale spoke to Cockermouth Soroptimists, she explained how falls can contribute to this problem. When an older person has a fall, this can damage their confidence and make them reluctant to leave the house. This is despite the fact that many falls take place in the home.

Sarah explained that some basic exercises can reduce the chance of falls by improving co-ordination and balance. She then demonstrated the exercises and invited
