THE WONDERFUL AND COMPUTERS

There are times when technology can bring little to the party, for instance when one of our Herdwicks gave birth to triplets ten days ago and just didn’t have enough milk to feed them all. We had to take the smallest away to bottle feed, but the web couldn’t help us source lamb milk fast enough. Fortunately, a local farmer was able to help and ‘Spice’ moved into the kitchen for four-hourly feeds of lamb formula.

It got me to thinking about shopping and banking and the decline of our high streets. I’m sad to see shops closing. Small and large traders are saying they can’t compete with online, they are genuine victims of our changing buying habits and changing society generally. The banks though appear to have jumped on a bandwagon and seem to me to be shutting branches just to cut costs. It’s not about their customers suddenly banking online - I heard a radio report this week say less than a third of people bank online - but there are alternatives, like the Cumberland Building Society, a great example of a local financial institute serving Cumbrian communities.

I make my living from online, I spend most of my time building websites for small businesses, helping them take advantage of changing consumer habits and sell more ‘stuff’ or helping to harness what is good about the web. I also fix people’s technology problems because frankly otherwise I’d never leave my office and would simply be a keyboard warrior my entire working life, which isn’t healthy – and my wife would probably leave me!

Websites do three basic things: educate, entertain or sell and the web can give small business access to a larger market. Mr. Tony Harrison the Butcher is out there on Facebook telling us what great steaks and pies he has on sale at any given point of the week, but I feel online is not the be all and end all for the 21st century. It’s important we remain grounded and understand that our high streets and local shops remain an important part of our communities, they are also employers and make a very positive contribution to our local economy. I guess what I’m saying is, don’t be blinded by the internet and digital technology, it has a part to play in our future but you have a choice. Support local businesses where you can, choose a building society over a big bank, deal with a human in a branch or a shop and know that in doing so, you are part of the community in which you live.

Spice is a bit confused about which community he belongs to, Sheep, Cat, Alpaca or Human but he’s definitely going to be a fine sheep – just a very friendly one!
