A construction company has revealed detailed designs for its proposed £3.5m redevelopment of a market in Greater Manchester. The McGoff Group has


plans to turn Urmston market into a contemporary food hall, which is scheduled to open in spring 2019. The designs by architect


Street Design Partnership outline the firm’s plans for the site, centred on a new- build food market, which include indoor and outdoor children’s play areas, private dining, a mezzanine level with additional seating, free WiFi, and space for pop-up stalls and events. The market, dubbed


Market 41, will be operated by WMC Retail Partners, working alongside Northern Restaurant & Bar Show chief executive Thom Hetherington. London-based WMC is an experienced market operator which owns two markets in Wellington and Morley and operates a number of other markets around the country. The company has expertise in working with developers on all aspects of market management, retail development and ‘placemaking’. Originally appointed to undertake a feasibility study


for the proposed market hall, WMC was subsequently taken on to develop a full business plan for the project and coordinate all aspects of the development including lettings, layout and legal agreements. At the time of its appointment, Sales and Marketing Manager at WMC, Esther Worboys, told local media: “We are really excited to be working with The McGoff Group on this innovative new concept for Urmston and will draw on the experience of operating our own markets and implementing similar projects for others across the UK to deliver a fantastic new market hall that will further invigorate Urmston town centre and offer a great new leisure experience for locals.” CEO of the Northern

promises to provide an extra dynamic to the flourishing food and drink offering in the town. “I look forward to

Lighting up the town


Landmark buildings in a Lancashire town centre will be lit up at night as part of a £2m scheme to create a new public square. Accrington’s Town Hall and


Market Hall will have colourful LED lights projected onto them at night to improve the appearance and safety of the area. The counci l has also revealed that a specially commissioned film will be projected onto the Market Hall at the grand opening of the

town’s new commemorative square in November. Work has been taking place


over the last few months to transform the area, and new street furniture and sculptures will shortly be installed commemorating the Accrington Pals and the history of the borough. Council leader Miles


Parkinson told local media: “It’s all about the visual impact on our two grand buildings which are historic within the town centre. “We look around other


major cities and towns across the country and it’s very popular to light up public buildings. “They enhance the


environment and also make the area safer and show the buildings off in the night time for people to see. “We want to make the


public realm stand out more and make them want to use that space in the evening.” Cllr Parkinson added that


the lighting would probably be on a timer and be switched off from around midnight, “because most places are shut by that time and people aren’t around in great quantities.” The grand opening of the


public square will take place on November 10 – the day before Armistice Day – and will coincide with a weekend of celebrations and festivities.

the McGoff Group, told local media: “Anticipation is already mounting in Urmston for the new food market hall, with lots of interest from locals in terms of timings and enquiries from potential operators, which is great to see so early on. “We want M41 to reflect Urmston’s vibrancy and increasing desirability as a great place to live, work and play, and have worked closely


with the local community to establish their views and understand their feedback regarding the concept , building design and product offering.”
