LIVE 24-SEVEN AS AN ACTRESS

IS IT FUN TO PLAY SOMEONE WHO WEARS COOL CLOTHES?

It feels like there’s more to Leah as a character than simply ‘Simon’s friend’. They have both been through so much together. They're 17 years old right now and they've both gone through things together over probably the last ten years. Simon has obviously had girlfriends and it hasn't worked out. Leah's never had a boyfriend, but she's clearly watched and been through all of Simon's relationships with him. And over that period of time, she has in a way fallen for her best friend. What happens to her through the course of the film is while Simon is dealing with his challenges, Leah's also going through her own struggles trying to deal with all the changes around her, and falling in love with Simon, thinking he feels the same.

Do you think it’s more common these days for films, and mainstream entertainment in general, to address issues? I definitely feel that there has been a shift in storytelling. I think there's a multitude of factors that go into that. I think audiences are a lot smarter and a lot more clued in with what's happening in the world, because it is such a global conversation now. And we are so unified now, not just as countries, but also as a global community. And I think that really has translated into film and television in recent years.

Having said all that, Love, Simon is also pretty funny too…

Yes, I think although this film has some wonderful underlying messages that are so strong and so important, it is also at the end of the day a film that's going to make you feel good! I think people are responding to it because of that. Walking out of the cinema and feeling positive and having a positive experience in a film is really wonderful. And perhaps called for, given the current global climate. In terms of funny moments, I think Logan Miller who plays Martin has some terrific scenes that really carry some of the humor through this film.

Talking of cast members, there seemed to be a real camaraderie on set. Now you are back together for today’s event. . . It's actually been really wonderful to see everyone. Today was the first day since filming that most of us have all been together, and it was like the same strong dynamics were immediately back. Also, the relationship with Simon and Leah and Nick, is pretty much the same as it is with Nick, myself and Jorge.

So, the relationship dynamic between the characters Simon Spier, Leah Burke and Nick Eisner is similar to the one between the actors Nick Robinson, Katherine Langford and Jorge Lendeborg? Yes! [Laughs] ‘Nick and Nick’ – it’s confusing! But it was good to see everyone again! It feels like a bit of a reunion…
