Viola Desmond showed her mettle in ‘rights’ saga

in the main gallery of a movie theatre instead of in the upstairs balcony re- served for blacks. When asked by the staff to move, she refused. The police were called and hauled her out, injur- ing her hip in the process. She was put in jail overnight and paid a $20 fine the next day. She was also charged with defrauding the government of Nova Scotia for not paying the tax on the difference between the cost of a ticket on the ground floor and the bal- cony where the blacks were sent. The tax amounted to one cent. She later decided to take the case to court, raising public awareness both at home and abroad about segrega- tion in Canada Viola Desmond is also featured in a permanent exhibit housed in the CMHR Canadian Journeys gallery. The note was officially unveiled by Stephen Poloz, Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Hon. Bill Mor- neau, Minister of Finance, at a cer- emony in Halifax. “It’s hard to put into words how proud and excited I was to learn that

our Museum would be featured on this historic bank note,” said Dr. John Young, CMHR president, speak- ing at the Halifax ceremony. “Viola Desmond’s courage has inspired our visitors by demonstrating that one person can make a difference. Hers is a story that all Canadians need to know and one that we are honoured to share.”

When the new $10 bill begins cir- culating in late 2018, Desmond will become the first Canadian woman to be portrayed on the front of a regu- larly circulating Canadian bank note. The CMHR will become the first museum ever pictured on a Canadian bank note. “This is an incredibly proud day for everyone who contributed to building the Canadian Museum for Human Rights,” said Gail Asper, a member of the CMHR’s board of trustees and na- tional campaign chair of the friends of the CMHR’s capital fundraising cam- paign. “This Museum has become a place of inspiration for visitors from across Canada and around the world.”
