What talents are hiding in your local

Meet the author – an evening with Peter James ‘At St Mary’s School in Horsham we had the honour of hosting an evening with international best-selling thriller writer Peter James. Peter’s sister-in- law, who is both a St Mary’s staff member and parent, had been talking about hosting “An Evening with Peter  the event in November 2017 at the Barn at St Mary’s Church on the Causeway, a venue that the HSA has access to due to our connections with the church. We started promoting the event in

beginning of the October half-term. A team of half a dozen volunteers ran

the event, although the driving force was Peter’s sister-in-law. Preparations were straightforward – we set up 120 chairs for guests and had volunteers on the door, checking names of those who had purchased tickets online. We sold tea, coffee, squash, wine

September via a number of Facebook pages, including our own, as well as via Parentmail and local newspapers. We sold tickets at £10 via the website WeGotTickets (wegottickets.com), a move that took a lot of the work out of the pre-event build up. Ticket sales went very well and we had pretty much sold out by the

and cakes, which we asked parents to donate. Due to the start time of the event, at 7:30pm, most people had already eaten, so refreshments didn’t do quite as well as we had anticipated. Peter spoke about his illustrious

career for the best part of an hour before answering questions from the audience. This was followed by an auction where the audience bid for a chance to appear in a forthcoming Peter James book – this incredible lot fetched £230!

community? It might not be a best-selling author, but you never know what special skills you might find that could work for a PTA event. Audit parents, contact local businesses and put a shout out through social media.

Peter was extraordinarily generous

with his time and afterwards spent well over an hour meeting his fans and signing copies of his latest book, Need You Dead. Staff from the local branch of Waterstones were also in attendance, selling copies of the book. The event was a resounding success,

raising a total of £1,440, which we put towards books for the school library.’ Blaise Tapp, HSA Member, St Mary’s CE Primary School, Horsham, West Sussex (210 pupils)  For more information on Peter James, visit peterjames.com.
