ALL THE LATEST NEWS, VIEWS AND STORIES FROM AROUND YOUR LOCAL AREA:MARCH/APRIL TIME FLIES FOR HEADTEACHER!

In September 2016, one of my childhood ambitions came to fruition when I began my new job as Headteacher at Bridekirk Dovenby School. I can’t quite believe I’m now over halfway through my second year in post and am being given this opportunity to look back and summarise the job thus far!

It may well be an overused saying: “Time flies when you’re having fun” but it truly has been an incredibly enjoyable, albeit busy, start to Headship. This is because I’ve met and worked with so many dedicated and exciting people within the Bridekirk/Cockermouth communities:

• Firstly, the children that attend BDS, all unique with their own distinctive personalities, which I’ve enjoyed deciphering and getting to know. Each morning, they come into school ready to learn; like sponges wanting to soak up the new experiences and knowledge on offer, yet learning to be resilient, wanting to make links and utilise what they already know. Like Margaret Mead says… “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think!” which is what as a school, we aim to do.

• The parents and governors, who want the best for their children, are a pleasure to work with. They question and work in a supportive, collaborative manner with the staff, often giving up their own time to volunteer in school.

• During my career, I’ve met many teachers who give above and beyond the hours required, as teaching is an all-consuming career which necessitates this commitment. As well as this, the staff at BDS are united in their drive to implement school improvement. They are a family who know and appreciate each other’s strengths and use them proactively so that projects, changes and new ideas have been calm and exciting to implement.

• My first year wouldn’t have been the same without the guidance and camaraderie from the other Cockermouth head teachers. Being a new head, I’ve had to become accustomed to wearing many varied hats and quickly altering from one to another. Support from those already used to wearing such hats, has been and still is important. As a consortium,

we meet regularly to work on our Peer- to-Peer action plan, providing the best we can for primary children in our area.

• As well as having the wider community for support, being a church school, we also have the Parish community. Together, we embed our Christian Values which are so significant to the ethos of the school. They show concern for the wellbeing of the children and the staff and often visit school providing extra curriculum and enrichment opportunities. This strong link supplied the foundation for the outstanding church inspection report we received last year and has been central to school life for many, many years.

It’s no wonder, working with all these people, that my first 18 months at Bridekirk Dovenby School have been a delight. Every day, I know children are coming to school ready to learn and the staff and community are facilitating that learning in an exceptional way… so we really do… “Work together, aim high and shine bright!”
