Are you being selfish enough? Kathy Hick Alexander Technique, Meditation, Reiki


Mention self-care, and many people think first of spa days, manicures, and pampering; and that it is self- indulgence rather than essential care of yourself. Yet true self-care is not about being selfish at the


expense of others; it is about prioritising your own health and wellbeing, which also better enables you to look after others. You can’t pour from an empty cup.


I define self-care as: ‘The daily practice of taking positive choices and actions to rebalance and refuel oneself mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.’


Self-care tools that become a way of life


Focusing on self-care has crept up on me. In my 20s and into my 30s, I pushed myself, not often listening to signals of pain or discontent trying to tell me to change how I cared for myself. I just kept going; that’s what you’re supposed to do, right? Hmmm.


My struggles with chronic lower-back pain led me to Alexander Technique, teaching me a different way to think about my habits of movement, and my choices. This brought me much greater ease and strength, and less pain. I hadn’t realised how much my everyday habits and choices were leading to pain, and even injury.


I gradually began to bring Meditation into my self-care mix, wanting to learn how to ‘be’ rather than ‘do’ all the time, and to be more in touch with my intuition and spirituality. The physical, mental and emotional benefits of my daily meditation practice are many, including greater calm and less stress. I seem to have more time in my day, although I still have the same 24 hours as before.

You can book an Alexander Technique 1:1 lesson with me, attend my Meditation courses or Meditation drop-in groups, or book a Reiki 1:1 session with me.
