Members of the Cockermouth Scottish Country Dance Club recently attended the annual Lancaster Ball. This was held in the impressive Ashton Hall, which has the bonus of an excellent sprung floor, making an evening’s dancing somewhat easier on the feet! Dancing to music from one of Scotland’s best dance bands, the Glencraig also kept us on our toes throughout the evening.

As befits a Ball held in such surroundings, the dress code was formal and there were plenty of lovely dresses and very smart kilts in evidence. Arriving dancers were met by a Pipe Major playing some stirring tunes, to make sure we were in the mood for some enthusiastic dancing.

The Ball started with a Grand March also led by the Piper. This was new to some of us but got the evening off to a great start. We danced some dances very well and made some mistakes in others but kept smiling throughout, particularly when other people suffered similar lapses in concentration!

The evening ended with everyone joining in singing Auld Lang Syne.

Our next local dance will be a much more informal Nice and Easy dance, a bit different but no-less enjoyable for that!
