From the Publisher Align for Resilience

E

veryone loves a good “before and aſter” story that turns out well. Te visceral relief of reflecting on what could have happened and instead feeling empow- ered by the resilience owned by the story’s hero can be life changing. If you

were not taught the tools of resilience as a child, don’t despair, they can still be self- learned in adulthood. As April Tompson’s February feature article, “Rising above Adversity,” shares,

“Challenges don’t define you. How you respond does.” Maintaining a balanced out- look that is realistic yet positive, enables individuals to move on. Resiliency is not just about how you bounce back from a single traumatic event; it is also about how you respond to the challenges that life presents each day. I love the idea that optimism means embracing the positive without denying the negative, while focusing on what’s within our control. It’s helpful to know that when we use willpower to attempt behavioral changes we

are trying to apply the conscious mind to something that’s rooted in the unconscious. We need to instead begin at the level of the unconscious. While it is our conscious mind that we apply moment to moment to think logically, reason and solve problems; it is our unconscious or subconscious mind that drives us. Our unconscious mind houses our beliefs, memories and emotions and is the

seat of our imagination. It runs the autonomic nervous system and keeps us alive by taking care of ongoing systems such as the beating of our heart and digestion; it com- prises the 90+ percent of our brain power. Te unconscious mind runs everything on autopilot and doesn’t like to make changes; with so many things to control, it wants to maintain the status quo. When we decide to make a change in our life, that decision is made with our con-

scious mind. Yet our unconscious mind is actively promoting behaviors aligned with deep and long-held beliefs—it has a nine to one advantage. Tat is why so many of us find ourselves failing to achieve well-intended goals and objectives of any kind. Te key to attaining desired change is getting our unconscious mind on board

with our conscious desire. It requires releasing the unconscious beliefs that are standing in our way. Once those are released, we can more easily attain and maintain desired changes in behavior, and achieve the results we desire. With the whole mind cherishing the same objectives, things begin to fall into place; we overcome self-sab- otage and can continue making the changes needed to actually achieve our goals. When this happens, we live more of the life we truly want and and feel the empower- ment of confidence and success. Cheers to overcoming hurdles,

Dee Whitaker, Publisher February 2018 7
