Firstly, many thanks to everyone who supported our coffee morning, we raised over £500. The sight of lots of enthusiastic young people delivering coffee and mince pies all over town was great to see.


Many readers will have been Venture Scouts and those with longer memories may even have been Rover Scouts. The fourth section of Scouts, for ages 14-18, has however, since 2004, been known as Explorer Scouts and we have a long-standing and successful Explorer Unit based in Cockermouth.


Cockermouth & District


Our unit takes part in a wide range of activities, with several meetings annually taking place with other local units from Workington, Whitehaven and beyond. We also organise an annual summer trip and complete the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, alongside the more challenging Queen’s Scout Award. Our recent summer trips have included Ireland, Wales, Isle of Arran, Holland and Northern Ireland. We also visited the international Scout Centre at Kandersteg in Switzerland, a visit we are repeating in 2019.

At our Tuesday meetings, members take a lead in anything from night hikes and axe skills to scavenger hunts and wide games, not forgetting annual karting, bowling and laser quest competitions. Time is also spent planning expeditions and taking part in joint activities with younger
