‘COME OVER & HELP US’: A PLEA FROM THE CHURCH IN CUBA
“Jesus answered and said unto them, ‘Go and shew…those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.’ ” – Matthew 11:4-6
WME Partners & Supporters,
CUBA – A country less than 300 miles off the coast of Florida. But once you’ve walked its streets and talked to its people, you know for certain you’re in a vastly different world.
This summer, I travelled with a mission team to Cuba. I was both apprehensive and excited. Cuba had always seemed to be shrouded in mystery since the days Castro came into power. What would I see when I actually stepped foot on its shores?
Yes, the photos you’ve seen are true. The streets are filled with classic cars and old buildings in tropical colors in various states of disrepair. It does feel as if you’ve stepped back a few decades. Pro-government slogans are everywhere. And life moves at a much slower pace.
But there is a pervading sadness over the people. Their life is a hard one. There is no real expectation for a better future. Many families have suffered continued loss over the years. A lot have turned to idol worship and witchcraft to find meaning. And there is a sense of discouragement and frustration around the island. The people are searching for something – ANYTHING – to bring hope to their lives.

Proverbs 13:12 sums up the situation in Cuba eloquently: “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.” The people of Cuba need Jesus Christ to find the hope and abundant life for which they so desperately long.
This is where one of the churches we visited meets for services, and it shows why new church construction is so important.
The difference between the “man on the street” and believers in Cuba was striking. It was in churches where I saw joy and hope, where people were freed from bondage, where crushed spirits were being healed, and where the poor heard the Gospel. Like moths to a flame, adults and children were drawn, curious to hear more about the light and hope that came from these churches.
