What is an Aromatherapy Treatment and how can it help you? Helen McDonald Holistic Massage and Reiki

A holistic Aromatherapy treatment addresses the physical levels of our being, along with the mind and the soul too.

A treatment encompasses the use of essential oils administered in a massage treatment. The essential oils have pharmacological properties which address imbalances on a physical level.

The pleasant smells of the essential oils have a psychotherapeutic effect.

Aromatherapy is a healing process. Massage stimulates circulation of blood and lymph, stimulates the immune system, reduces high blood pressure, reduces muscle tension and pain. It is a preventative treatment. The reduction in muscular tension also has a positive psychological effect.

At the end of your treatment, a blend of essential oils is made into an oil for you to use at home on your skin, or one can be made to use in the bath.

Spotlight on some popular essential oils

Your Aromatherapist may use some of the following oils in your treatment:

• Frankincense – used to alleviate anxiety, nervous tension and stress-related conditions. Used successfully to treat respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and catarrh. Excellent for the care of

dry, mature skin. Energetically, Frankincense helps the smooth flow of energy in the system, useful in cases where a build-up of stress has caused nervous conditions, irritability and insomnia. Frankincense is an oil of liberation; helping us to cut ties with our past, where these may be blocking personal expansion.

• Sandalwood – Clinical trials have shown that components in Sandalwood have a sedative effect. An oil used to treat nervous tension, insomnia and headaches. It is also used in the treatment of bronchitis involving a dry cough. Sandalwood is useful in the healing of dry skin conditions too. The oil of choice for meditation and healing work. A sacred oil, Sandalwood can help provide a still space for spiritual practice. The ‘Om’ of essential oils!

• Rosemary – an invigorating oil, used to strengthen the nervous system. Often used in hair-care products as it is known to stimulate hair growth. Valuable in massage for the treatment of tired, aching muscles and arthritis. Rosemary is an invigorating oil, excellent for the promotion of the movement of energy around the body. On a subtle level, Rosemary is thought to be protective; guarding our energy from the influences around us.

You are welcome to come and enjoy an Aromatherapy treatment and experience the powerful effects of essential oils for yourself!
