My passport has been gathering dust for the last few months!

After a fantastic run, in which I went to Italy in April, Majorca in May, Japan in June, the UK road-trip in July and Skiathos in August, other than a trip along the seafront at Silloth on my skateboard, September, October and November have been all work and no play! So, in lieu of me telling you all about how nice Silloth is for a day out (apart from my favourite fish and chip shop closing) I will pass on my thoughts about last year’s top trip to Portugal.

Lagos is a beautiful town situated on the western Algarve, it has stunning beaches, a huge choice of restaurants and bars in an historic town centre. It has retained its traditional character, and this is surrounded by ancient Moorish walls overlooking a pretty harbour.

We stayed at the Tivoli hotel, officially a four star but more like a good 3 star which is in a central location only a few minutes to the harbour, town centre and beaches. My morning walk via the local coffee and custard tart shop was along the Meia Praia Beach to the hotels beach club, which is not a bad way at all to start the day.

We found some fantastic restaurants, from traditional Portuguese, to an amazing Japanese Tapas place. Nightlife is varied, with small bars, through to late-night music venues.

Close to Lagos is a variety of activities and sights, which range from waterparks and zoos

to historic monuments and walking trails. Also around Lagos, are many interesting towns including Sagres, Silves, Luz and Portimão, which are fab for a day out. I can highly recommend Lagos for both families’ and couples of all ages.

Clever!

The French ski resort of Val Thorens is one of my favourites! It’s a bit like a high-rise housing estate in the mountains but the skiing is amazing. They have installed sensors on each piste which monitors how many people are using the run. The results are transmitted to screens at the bottom of the mountain allowing skiers to choose a quieter run.

In light of all the recent press surrounding car hire companies and the various ways in which they manage to get (scam) customers to pay out extra dollars, euros and dongs, here are a couple of tips to keep your hard cash for more useful things (wine):

Travelling with kids – they will charge you around £10.00 per day per seat, so take your own as most airlines will carry them free.

Before you get in the car, always walk around and check the car for the tiniest bump or scratch. Make sure it goes on the rental agreement or they will charge you for it!
