As the recently appointed Group Scout Leader at Cockermouth Scouts, I must begin by saying a huge thank you to my predecessor Mike Fitzgerald and I do so on behalf of all who have benefited from his time, enthusiasm and skills over many years. It is no exaggeration to say that without his involvement, our Scout Group would be a shadow of itself.

Mike isn’t lost to Scouting, he has taken on the role of Group Chairman and is focusing his energies on our booming Beaver Scout Colony. We could easily fill a second Colony and are looking to expand the provision for our youngest members.

So, the new school and Scouting year is upon us and we have plenty going on to keep our members busy between now and Christmas. We should congratulate our team of Explorer Scouts who successfully completed their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Expedition in Snowdonia during the summer holiday.

This term sees amongst other things, the Cubs and Scouts taking part in sleepovers at Loweswater and Lamplugh, plus shelter building and plenty of camp fire and food activities! Our Explorer Scouts will be completing night hikes, going bowling with other local units and having a survival skills evening. Our Beavers are not left out with games, crafts, visits, walks and much more! We also have a whole Group bonfire plus our annual Coffee Morning at the URC on Saturday 16th December, to which everyone is warmly invited. Once again, our very popular coffee and mince pie delivery service will also operate to businesses in town.

As well as having our own fantastic building and outdoor space, we are fortunate to have an excellent leader team but with 100 members across five sections (Beavers, two Cub Packs plus Scouts and Explorers), we are kept very busy. We are therefore delighted that in the last few months two new leaders, Lyanda Scadding and Jon Bradley, have come on- board to support Beavers and Tuesday Cubs but we are always open to new offers of support, whether regular or occasional.

More details of our Scout Group can be found on Facebook by searching Cockermouth Scout Group. Alternatively, you can contact us through the Cumbria Scouts website.

Isn’t it time for your child to ‘Join The Adventure’?
