Redirecting the Future by Changing the Present
Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, “Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 19:13-14 WME Partners & Supporters,
In a world where hope is a rare commodity, some of those who suffer the worst and have the least opportunity are the Roma children. They are Gypsies and are part of a people who have known generations of persecution. Where others have seen no reason to reach out to the Roma children, we have heard the call to touch them with love and compassion.
In Ceuas Village, Romania, the Roma children are expected to attend school. But as their families do not speak Romanian, what these students hear each day is completely foreign. So while education is their one real hope to escaping poverty and prejudice, essentially the school system is failing them. Therefore the Roma children just sit in classrooms not learning or understanding anything. Rather than progress, they get further and further behind. Their isolation and illiteracy grows, reinforcing the cycle of poverty, along with the stigma and hopelessness that goes with it.
Drowning in a sea of ignorance leaves people adrift and lost, yet that would seem to predetermine the fate for the Roma children of Ceuas. And our partners working in Romania refused to accept that. While they knew they could not reach every child in need,

they asked God to help them at least begin to impact a few of them. From those prayers a vision was born, and now ten Roma children are attending an after-school program that is redirecting their future by changing the present.
Thanks to the local school, we have free use of a classroom. Now these poor children are receiving nutritious lunches and snacks. A teacher who speaks their language has been hired. The teacher loves these children, and it is clear the children feel the same way. Each day they are defying expectations and growing by leaps and bounds. In time they should catch up to the non-Roma children in everything from language skills to math.
Before the after-school program began, these children had little or no chance.
On top of this pilot education program, we also have an enthusiastic Christian who has accepted the call to come every
