Many of us will have vivid memories of the 2009 floods. Some will have their own stories to recall but how many end in good news?

After the floods, Age UK (Cockermouth) saw that the communities on the edge of town and in the surrounding villages were struggling. Having successfully acquired substantial funds, the team set about gathering volunteers to help rebuild relationships

and communications within the older community.

They held a strawberry afternoon tea for anybody interested in volunteering. The plan was to encourage similar events to take place monthly out in the community. Two volunteers from Bridekirk saw the benefit of such a venture and quickly came on board. With the help of Age UK, Bridekirk Friendship Group was established. Very quickly the afternoon tea turned into a light lunch and was being held weekly rather than monthly; with a regular attendance of ten people.

A weekly commitment required many more volunteers than the original two. The Church minister helped to encourage more volunteers and soon there was a rota of teams of two people providing lunches for those in need of support and friendship. The group is still operating eight years later. It provides lunches weekly, with a definite buzz and enthusiasm in the air.

Last year, I was invited to join the team of volunteers. This was the first I had heard about the Bridekirk Friendship Group and the fantastic work they do. Being a keen cook and baker, I was more than happy to help. I very quickly realised how much those attending benefited, not just from the meal but also from the social interaction. New lasting friendships have been established, with some even going on short breaks together. I am overwhelmed by their gratitude for the simple service provided by the volunteers and get a huge sense of satisfaction from volunteering with this group.

A LEGACY OF THE 2009 FLOODS
