Shell detonated in quarry blast

THE Ministry of Defence's explo- sive disposal team have carried out a controlled explosion of a de- vice, understood to be from World War II. The device was found at lunchtime on August 31 by a worker at the Blaise Farm Quarry at Ashton Way, Kings Hill, West Malling. Police were called and the area

was sealed off. The shell, which was confirmed

to be a 50kg German Luftwaffe air- dropped bomb, was detonated at about 11am on September 1. The quarry is run by the Gal-

lagher group and a spokesman said that if a bomb is to be discovered, then a quarry is the safest place. On the day of the controlled ex- plosion, a police statement said: “There are no safety concerns for the local vicinity; however it is pos- sible that the explosion may be heard for a considerable distance and police would like to remind residents there is no cause for alarm.” Three years ago, a pupil sparked

a full scale bomb alert and evacua- tion when a devicewas discovered at Kings Hill Primary School. Police and MoD ordnance ex-

perts from Folkestone were scram- bled to the scene at Crispin Way while childrenwere sent home. Parentswere contacted by phone

and email to collect their children. The device was kept in a room

until a bomb disposal team arrived to dispose of it and it was then it was identified as a harmless train- ing relic from the wartime RAF base. The youngster had stumbled on

the foot-long device in woodland near to the school. There have been numerous simi-

lar discoveries in Kent, especially at Hawkinge, near Folkestone, where house building on the former Bat- tle of Britain airfield exposed many segments of pipe bombs. The devices were laid in long

strips and ready to be activated should the Germans invade on the Kent coast. The bombs would have made the landing and take-off strip useless to Hitler’s aircraft.
