Safety Net Speakers

The next event was the Regional Conference at Rheged, organised by the club, which had the theme Women Inspiring Action. There were some very inspirational speakers including Claire Salerno from the Purple Community Fund, Rachel Holliday from Calderwood House, Jacqui Wallace from Brathay Trust and Dr. Sophie Inman. Many of the speakers were very frank about their own personal struggles and how they had overcome these to become the women they now are. Club member Joan Hetherington, had produced a video of herself giving a

If this sounds the kind of organisation you might enjoy, you would be made very welcome. For more information, please visit our website. There is also an informal coffee morning on the second Monday of the month, at the Lakes Home Centre in Cockermouth at 10.30am. We don’t discuss business, we just chat!

SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL OF COCKERMOUTH & DISTRICT

It was another busy month for the members of Soroptimist International, Cockermouth and District. The speakers at the first meeting were from the local branch of Safety Net, a charity which supports the recovery of those affected by rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence. Laura and Kathy spoke about the fact that their clients range in age from five upwards and the whole family usually needs to be supported. The help lasts as long as is needed and the practical and emotional support offered, includes therapy, counselling, financial help, training and advice. They gave two case examples which were very moving and which encouraged a lot of questions. They also gave members a short quiz about statistics and some of the correct answers were quite disturbing. For example, last year, 6456 cases of domestic abuse were reported to the police in Cumbria.

monologue from Shirley Valentine and this was very well received. To end the serious day on a light note, Lyn Roberts, the Divisional Commissioner for Guiding, spoke about the laughter course she had been on and had everyone in stitches with the routines she gave delegates to perform.

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS

The Bell Ringers at All Saints’ Church, Cockermouth joined in with the NT Heritage Open Days by opening the bell tower to the public.

There were tours up to the ringing chamber, where the team gave demonstrations of bell ringing. A grand total of 159 people visited the tower to learn about ringing and see the bells in action. Visitors had the opportunity to pull a bell rope to chime the bell.

Most people were fascinated by the art of bell ringing with positive comments in support of keeping the 400-year-old tradition alive.
