VIOLENT CONFLICT ERUPTS ON MINDANAO ISLAND IN THE PHILIPPINES
“Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man; which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war… Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.” – Psalm 140:1-2 & 4
WME Partner & Supporters:
There is a battle in the streets of Marawi affecting millions in the Philippines. After a military raid failed to capture a terrorist leader, Muslim militants reacted with violent attacks in Marawi, a city on the southern island of Mindanao. These extremists have laid siege to the city, battling police and military. ISIS flags have been raised on seized government property. At least 178 people have died in the fighting.
The clash has included military offensives, gunfire, explosions, helicopters and tanks which have created great destruction. Militants have burned one Christian church and college, defaced the interior of another church, and taken a Catholic priest and a dozen parishioners hostage. Most of the 200,000 residents of Marawi have fled, seeking shelter and supplies to wait out the combat.
Philippine President Duterte has declared at least 2 months of martial law on Mindanao. The heightened restrictions affect all 22 million residents of the island. One major concern is that extremist activity in Mindanao could spread to nearby countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia.

Mindanao is also a strategic center for WME’s ministry efforts in the Philippines.Mindanao has a significant Muslim population and contains 11 of the 20 poorest provinces of the country. From our beginnings, WME has sought to reach the poor and lost in areas marked by difficulty and spiritual darkness. That is why we have focused on outreach efforts in Mindanao, boldly proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ and helping those in need. By the Lord’s favor, continued prayer and your financial support, WME has established churches, native missionaries, child sponsorship programs, child daycares, schools, disaster relief, vocational help, water wells, Bible distribution, minister training and more on Mindanao.
We’ve received this report from our WME leader in Mindanao:
When people are starving, a spoonful of rice brings hope. It is the answer to the prayers of those living on the edge be- tween life and death.
“Martial law was declared all over Mindanao to address worsening security and quell lawlessness, particularly the ongoing conflict with this group that has been there for several decades. There have been massive evacuations of Marawi City residents. This has created a big humanitarian crisis. Military
