A RAY OF HOPE IN A UGANDAN SLUM

Can you imagine living with your family in a house no bigger than a Milford beach hut, with an open sewer running alongside? This is the daily reality for those who live in the slums of Kampala. I had seen such scenes on my TV, but witnessed it first hand for the first me in 2007. My husband Steve and I had volunteered to help in a ny school, ‘Ray of Hope’ situated in the swampy Kampala slum. This ramshackle building was filled to the brim with over 100 hungry children ‐ hungry for food and even more hungry for an educaon. The school was started in 2000 by an inspiraonal lady called Emily Hashima. She gave up a secure job in a state school to devote her life to improving the chances of

children and vulnerable women. We returned home to Milford aer a month, needing to do something more to help Ray of Hope Ministries, and so began to fundraise. In that first year £6,000 was raised. How could we stop? Stascs of poverty were now real people with heart‐breaking lives. We urged people to join us in being friends to those who endure the daily grind of life in a snking slum, those who have no access to free health care and have a limited life expectancy. Thanks to the generosity of a small number of people, a feeding programme was started and a beer school building was purchased in 2010. In 2013 ‘Friends of Ray of Hope’ became a registered charity and at least one trustee visits the project every year.

Some of the original children have been able to complete their educaon in secondary school and some have gone on to university. Educaon is the key to help a child escape from poverty!

 We want to support Emily at Ray of Hope Ministries in her vision of providing educaon for MORE children.

 We need to raise £150,000 to buy a new school building which would provide more classrooms and beer facilies and so ………...

Our policy is to give   , which is donated, to the project.

 We NEED donaons from local businesses and from individuals.

Thank you! Liz Jennings
