wards of merit were presented by the B.C. Fruit Growers Association this fall to Hank Markgraf, grower services manager for the B.C. Tree Fruits Co-operative and Kenna MacKenzie, associate director, Summerland Research and Development Centre.
Markgraf began work for the co-op
immediately after graduating in horticulture from Washington State University, and grew up on an orchard in Kelowna, where he still farms 10 acres.
With the merger of the major co-op packinghouses into one, he was appointed manager, providing technical horticultural services to the whole valley.
MacKenzie has been in her position
in Summerland since 2010 and worked as a research scientist in entomology at Kentville, Nova Scotia for 17 years prior to the move west. As well, a life membership was presented to Ranbir Kambo, who has served on the boards of the co-op, the BCFGA and is a current director of Summerland Varieties Corporation. The press award went to Lionel Doherty, editor of the Oliver Chronicle.
