Maine Coastal News FREE LITTLE GIRLS Top Racer, But What About MISS KARLEE?

Shawn Alley's LITTLE GIRLS won everything at both Boothbay and Rockland.

BOOTHBAY/ROCKLAND – The 2015 lobster boat racing season opened on the fi rst weekend of summer, 20 and 21 June, at Boothbay and Rockland. There had been a lot of talk over the winter and spring about new boats, or old boats with new engines. Several of the new boats launched this past winter we know planned to come out and compete. There were also a number of exist- ing boats that re-powered, and some of these specifi cally for racing. The one that was getting the most attention was Ed Shirley’s MISS KARLEE, which is a Mitchell Cove 32 now with a C-18 1,000-hp Caterpillar installed by Johnson’s Boat Yard on Long Island. Now it was time for some these rumors to get answered.

On Friday afternoon, the boats from away started arriving at Brown’s Wharf in Boothbay Harbor. David Johnson’s CASCO MISS, Zach Donnell’s HAPPY HOUR, MISS KARLEE and Steve Johnson’s LYNN MARIE were the fi rst to arrive. Soon others followed: Keith Jordan’s BAILEY & BEL- LA, Scott Woods’ WILD ONE, and David Grant’s EASY MONEY with more arriving as the evening went on for a total of about 15 racers when the sunset. The last one in was Shawn Alley’s LITTLE GIRLS, because even though I was staying on the other side of the harbor I could hear his engine when they took her off the trailer and sailed her over to the dock. With great weather it was hoped that

we would have 60 or more boats racing. When we arrived at Brown’s on Saturday morning there were some new boats tied up: from Friendship, Jacob Lee’s HAULIN’ ASH [Wesmac Super-wide 46, 750-hp FPT]; from Milbridge Eric Beal’s JENNA MARIE [Northern Bay 36, 610-hp Cum- mins]; from Steuben Arnold Francis’ KIM CELESTE [Calvin 44, 1,000-hp MAN]; and from Owl’s Head Justin Philbrook’s REVERENCE [Wesmac SW 46, 1000-hp Caterpillar]. There were also several older boats that came out for the fi rst time such as: Eben Wilson’s ELSIE H. [Johns Bay 40, 300-hp John Deere], which he bought mid-winter; and William Pinkham’s J BUG [Novi, 750-hp John Deere]. At the end of signups we had a total of 41 boats entered. The fi rst three races of the day were the

Work Boat Classes. There were no entrants in Class A (Skiffs 16-feet and under with outboards up to 30 hp, Operator 18 years and younger), but there were four in Class B (Inboards, outboards or outdrives, 31 to 90 hp). The dominate boat has been for the last several years Marshall Spear’s J-BIRD [16’; 90-hp] and today was no different as he lead the other three racers up the course to the fi nish line with a speed of 36.8 mph. Second went to Amanda Dumas’ ZIPPIN’ [Corson 14; 60-hp Johnson], who left Al Strout’s CLUSTA [Lowe 18, 40-hp Tohat- su] wallowing in his wake. Fourth went to John Albaum’s LITTLE ONE [Holland 14,

25-hp]. In Class C (Inboards, outboards or outdrive 91 hp and up) another four racers came to the line. As they came off the start line it looked close, but soon it was obvious that Dave Johnson’s CASCO MISS [Eastern 22, 130-hp Honda] was in the lead and went on for the win. Back a couple of boat lengths was Daniel Lewis’ LOOSE ONE 2 [Leblanc 24; 150-hp Yamaha] followed by Jim Koeh- ling’s MALAGO [Crowley Beal 23; 150-hp Yamaha] and Linc Simmons’ RIPTIDE. Next up came the Gasoline Classes

with fi ve races, but Class A (4 & 6 cylinder 24 feet and over), Class B (V-8 up to 375 cid, 24 feet and up) and Class E (V-8, Over 525 cid, 28 feet and over, superchargers/

Turbos) had no entrants. In Class C (V8, 376 to 525 cid, 28 feet and over) there was just one entrant, Randy Durkee’s BLACK DIAMOND [Holland 32, 454 Chevrolet] and Class D (V-8, 376 to 540 cid, 28 feet and over) there were two entrants, Shawn Alley’s LITTLE GIRLS [28’ Calvin Beal, a new Ford engine] and Bruce Engert’s THUNDERBOLT [South Shore 30; 496 Chevrolet]. THUNDERBOLT did not make it out to the starting line so it was decided to run the two classes together as they would both win their respective classes anyway. Off they went with BLACK DIAMOND
