Despite ever increasing energy costs, many commercial swimming pools across the UK remain uncovered at night. The reality is that up to 65% of the energy used within a leisure centre will be used for pool heating and ventilation so controlling costs within the swimming pool hall is absolutely vital. As operators struggle to manage budgets, sadly, the threat of pools facing closure is becoming a reality.

The good news is that energy bills really can be lowered by using some form of pool cover, sometimes by as much as 30% but due to high bather loads, long operating hours and non-rectangular shaped pools, it is often difficult for commercial pools to use traditional pool covers. Liquid pool covers provide an opportunity for commercial pools to reduce running costs and meet energy saving targets by reducing evaporation and heat loss from the pool. The reduction in evaporation also reduces the load on the dehumidification plant to deliver further cost savings and environmental benefits. The COVERFree liquid pool cover from HeatPumps4Pools Ltd, has a unique polymer blend formula which forms an invisible layer on the surface of the pool. This layer traps the water molecules beneath it to reduce water evaporation and hence heat loss. COVERFree does not contain any alcohol and therefore is non-flammable and non- hazardous. Commercial pool operators can benefit from lower risk assessments for commercial plant rooms if COVERFree is stored within them.

An automatic dosing pump can add the correct amount of COVERFree to the pool to maintain optimum product performance. The product is safe for bathers and the environment being both pH neutral and biodegradable. Larger commercial size bottles are available which deliver volume cost

savings for commercial pool operators.

COVERFree is the perfect solution for

commercial pools, keen to realise a quick return on investment.

EVA Optic’s underwater lighting uses up to 87.5% less energy, while its ambient systems save around 85%

LED Lighting For The Whole Pool Hall Environment

While LEDs have long been recognised as a highly effi cient lighting solution, the aggressive pool hall environment has meant that its benefi ts have been restricted to underwater. Until now.

Compared with halogen equivalents, EVA

Optic’s underwater lighting uses up to 87.5% less energy, while its ambient systems save around 85%. However, none of this would be possible without EVA’s precision engineering that protects against chlorine, moisture and heat. Its downlights, for example, are the only ones on the market to feature a chlorine-resistant coating, while its LEDLine strip-lights utilise a highly resistant anodised aluminium to maximise durability.

Heat – particularly near the roof of a pool facility – can be extremely damaging to ambient lighting. EVA has resolved that problem by preventing any negative impact on the lighting units and the efficiency of LEDs. Self-regulating heat control (ATS) helps to prevent premature failure and, as a result, units last much longer than lighting alternatives: up to 60,000 hours. The low-maintenance, high-quality systems comply with the relevant European standards for lighting levels (EN-12193) and emergency lighting (EN-1838) and can be retrofitted into existing facilities or incorporated into new designs. The EVA Optic LED lighting range is now available in the UK through an exclusive partnership with Golden Coast.

One obvious downside to many swimming pools is the lack of fl exibility some offer and the amount of permanent space they occupy, but over recent years, that has been changing thanks to the installation of moving pool fl oors.

The provision of a moving pool floor now opens open up a whole new world of exciting possibilities. Commercial facilities are now benefitting from multi-use pools with better access for the young and disabled and even additional sports halls.

Moving floors aren’t cheap though and whilst the costs of each varies, it seems for many commercial operators the investment is worthwhile thanks to the flexibility and additional revenue generating opportunities that they provide. In fact despite their costs, it is estimated that half of all new commercial pools being built will have a moving floor option of some sort. Running costs are reduced too as when
