Aquatic Centre Technology Revolutionising UK Pools The Greek inventor Archimedes is credited

with building the first platform lift and after two millennia and in response to an Olympics Delivery Authority competition, the concept has now reached the swimming pool. London 2012 made a commitment to be the most accessible games ever. The Aquatics Centre set a new standard including their revolutionary pool access system called ‘Poolpod’. Poolpod’s research showed that access difficulties are caused by pregnancy, joint weakness, and sports injuries as well as a wide range of disabilities. They responded with a design that meets a vastly wider set of needs than traditional hoists.

Unlike previous solutions the Poolpod is a sleek looking platform lift that lets disabled people access the pool quickly and under their own control. As Sport England puts

it “Submersible platform lifts provide a flexible and more dignified means of entering a swimming pool” and Westpark Leisure Centre which has a Poolpod installed reports: “Poolpod looks smart… has become part of everyday life and users find it comfortable and simple to use.”

Poolpod report that most adopters are local pools that recognise their duty to all members of their community as platform lifts “are now the only way to ensure that statutory access obligations are completely fulfilled”. There are further advantages, says Josh Reid, Poolpod Managing Director: “Our lift leaves lanes uninterrupted for swimming, is less hassle for lifeguards, is safer and better looking than other devices and is good value for money.”

Poolpod opened a modern factory in 2014 to scale up production. They assemble the lifts in the UK and by using automated technologies that lower costs and provide high quality, they believe they will be able to beat off any copycat products that emerge. Poolpod have patent applications for over 20 features of their system in countries across the world and have the European trademark for their ‘Poolpod’ brand and the company aims to begin exporting to Australia in 2014

Fairlocks Can See A Bright Future

Fairlocks Pool Products Ltd has now become the UK distributor of water-tec. co.uk LED underwater lighting technology. These bespoke 316 polished stainless steel high power LED lights are streets ahead of the old fashioned halogen bulbs. Simple installation with the push fit application into pipe work; they have a lifespan of between 35,000 and 50,000 hours. Compared to the old fashioned halogen which has a lifespan of between 2,000 and 6,000 hours. The bulbs also suffer what is termed as ‘catastrophic failure’ which essentially means that they work until they don’t! LEDs are the new buzz word in any lighting application, not only are they environmentally friendly, they also save money with up to 80% saving on lighting bills, if that’s not enough the humble

LED offers a wide range of colours to

choose from. The most common

choice of colour application is called RGB, which stands for Red, Green, and Blue. When using the RGB application specific colours can be picked, or have the scrolling application to mix the colours together. Today’s smartphones have allowed the LED to come into its own, allowing the customer to be in control. Fairlocks can now offer this technology on its new lighting range. The LED lamps are set in an elegant flush fitting housing with polished 316 stainless steel facia, providing a beautiful finish in pools and spas.

LED is far friendlier than halogen and with 25% of the world’s energy being used by lighting the need to implement better, more cost effective and efficient methods of lighting is of paramount importance. Water- Tec LED technology provides the ideal solution to these demands with the added bonus of a bespoke look to illuminate your customer’s swimming pool or spa.
