South Florida Next Up On May 16. –by Chris Pike

Not many people know it, but one in three dogs will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime. I didn’t know those statistics until my own dog was diag- nosed with this disease.

Memorial charms are an expression of love. Custom designed and hand crafted with the cremation ashes of your beloved pet,

glass artist Kara Renee Ramdas permanently layers the ashes along with silver leaf discreetly between glass to create your unique bead.

This past January, 350 dog lovers experienced the

energy and passion we all have for our furry family members surrounded by the amazing sights and sounds of cosmic bowling. We had one goal and purpose at heart: to raise money for canine cancer research and strike out canine cancer. The North Florida Chapter of the National Canine

Cancer Foundation (NCCF) hosted the second annual Bark and Bowl at Bowl America in Jacksonville. The NCCF Bark and Bowl is the largest and only fundraising event in the North Florida area dedicated to finding a cure for canine cancer. Teams from as far away as New Orleans came out for this one night event benefiting dogs nation- wide. We had a fullhouse – 32 lanes of crashing pins and gutter-balls. Team members had their photos taken on the “Pink” carpet. Tito’s Vodka hosted the inaugural Tito’s DogBar. We must thank the teams at Gator Country and

Classic Rock for not only hosting the festivities but securing one-of-a-kind items for silent auction and raffle - Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Keith Urban signed guitars, rawhides and mem- orabilia. Presenting sponsor, Southeast Veterinary Oncology team, The Pit Bowlers, took home the honor of our “Top Fundraising Team” raising a total of $5,070. The event raised more than $36,500 for canine cancer

research. Combined with the 2013 event, the North Florida Chapter has raised more $60,000 for canine cancer in two short years, making the Jacksonville Bark and Bowl the second highest grossing Bark and Bowl event in NCCF history. Thank you to our partners including Petco

Foundation, The New Barker, Blue Buffalo, Pet Supermarket, Whole Foods and Smart Pharmacy for mak- ing this event possible. Each day, an owner learns that their dog has cancer.

It is the National Canine Cancer Foundation’s mission to eliminate cancer in dogs. Help make a difference by join- ing us in 2015 as we bowl to strike out canine cancer for a third year in a row. Together, We Are The Cure. WeAreTheCure.com U
