The best way to find talent is by using a third party, Zoch says. A third party endorsement has greater weight to candidates than the company acting on behalf of itself. An advantage to using a specialized search firm is its “reach” or the broad network of contacts and relationships that it can leverage to get a client’s message delivered and the influence, with that network, to find and attract the right person. “If you don’t have influence and a large network, borrow someone else’s,” he says. And even if you have the network, “sometimes you may be too close to the process, problems and team to make the right choice and/or too scared to make the wrong choice,” Zoch says. “So it pays to have someone guide you and act as your consultant when it comes to something as important as trusting your


multi-million dollar investment, a.k.a., your surgery center, to a new person.” Also ask yourself if you get great candidates, do you have the ability and/ or time to vet those candidates properly and respond to them in a timely man- ner? “Some people simply don’t have the time, and it’s better to acknowledge that upfront instead of waiting a month, after the person that gave notice is gone,”


Zoch says. “Then the other employees in your ASC are burdened and stressed and you still don’t have the position filled.” Leadership roles are vital to the suc- cess and survival of ASCs and the prof- its and distribution that accrue from them, so it is worth the time, effort and expense to do it right the first time, Zoch says. “The difference between a medio- cre administrator and a good administra- tor could be millions of dollars. It could also be retaining your good staff. People leave managers, not companies. Good managers attract good staff. “At the end of the day, everyone wants


the disruption that naturally occurs when a leader leaves to end, and for things to get back to normal,” Zoch says. “Make sure you are deliberate about finding the best possible person, whether they are across town or across the state. Top ASC talent pays for itself many times over.”
