NEWS IN BRIEF

SUPPORT GROWS FOR OLYMPIC- SIZED POOL FOR JERSEY

In 2015, Jersey will host the Island Games, an international multi- sports event organised by the International Island Games Association, but the swimming isn’t expected to be held in the 25m pool at Les Quennevais. Support though is growing for the building of the island’s first Olympic-sized pool with a Facebook page called “Olympic 50m pool for Jersey” attracting nearly 2,000 likes in its first week. At the last Games, in Bermuda this summer, Jersey topped the swimming medals table with 32, well clear of Cayman Islands in second place.

A recently announced sports strategy includes plans to plough an extra £6m into sport in the island over the next two years in the build up to the 2015 Island Games, however, although the strategy outlined plans to improve school swimming programmes and a desire to ensure all children become competent swimmers, it did not include funding for a new pool.

WICKFORD PLANS POOL REVAMP A planning application has been submitted to Basildon Council that if accepted, will see a £2.4m transformation of Wickford Swimming Pool. The application follows the council approving the complete renovation and refurbishment of the pool plus the addition of a new fitness facility as part of a £3m investment into Wickford town centre. If approved, it is expected that work at the Essex site will start by January 2014, with the refurbishment of the pool and changing rooms completed by April 2014.

Pool Diving Solutions Go From Strength To Strength

Since opening in 2011 the objective of Stockport based Pool Diving Solutions has been to offer underwater swimming pool repairs and maintenance at competitive prices, without sacrificing excellent quality workmanship. Having just celebrated its second anniversary, the company are confident that they have executed that objective thus far and this is reflected in the relationships they have built and maintained with councils, management companies, schools, universities and contractors across the UK over this short period. Not complacent in their achievements to date, the company continues to learn and devise new cost effective and durable methods to approach underwater repairs. Although consisting of just a few members, the experience and skills of the Pool Diving

Solutions team enables them to complete more complex projects. Recently, a contract required the company’s expertise in underwater drilling to improve the method currently used to change a boom, from an air system to a hydraulic ram system. Pool Diving Solutions were able to complete the entire installation underwater using hydraulic tools. Some of their

other larger projects include a forty- five square metre underwater tiling project completed at 1escape health club in Dublin plus a six hundred square metre underwater grouting assignment completed at Grand Central

What’s The Forecast For 2014?

Predicting what the weather will do in the coming months, and how it will affect your business, is notoriously difficult. But, there are other trends that can be mapped to give you an accurate picture of the industry’s outlook, thanks to the Wet Leisure Industry Survey 2013 – which is currently seeking views from all businesses. Now in its third year, the annual survey, which is sponsored by Golden Coast, gathers information on changing tastes, economic factors and business performance – to deliver the essential market intelligence companies need to adapt and grow. To achieve the biggest, clearest picture of the industry it is important that businesses take the time to participate. The survey can be completed very quickly online at www.goldenc.

As well as facts and figures,

it also invites opinions – all of which are treated anonymously. The results, which will be distributed at SPATEX, include tracked changes in recent years and lets companies assess how their performance compares to the industry as a whole. Golden Coast is a firm believer in the benefits of such strategic information and is happy to say that its own strategy in the last year has been very successful. Highlights have included signing a deal with Sundance Spas and progress in building

a special network of dealers to meet the growing demand for these premium products. The year has also seen new partnerships with Darlly, Triogen and EVA Optic, and the introduction of a retrofit pool equipment range, all in response to identified trends.

Jamie Adams, Golden Coast’s Managing Director, says: “The unusually long period of good weather was a pleasant surprise – and thanks to our strategy we were ready to make the most of it.

“In fact, Golden Coast was one of the very few larger companies that actually grew its business this year. I would urge all companies to contribute to – and take advantage of –

the Wet Leisure Industry Survey so they can be equally prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
