SUCCESSFUL WOMEN IN WIND

WOMEN IN WIND GETTING A LITTLE MORE PERSONAL

We hope you have enjoyed the various articles so far within this feature.

Regular readers will have noticed that we are a more personal publication than most and feature ‘A day in the life of…’ which highlights some of the professionals who work more at the sharp end of the industry.

Our ’20 Questions’ feature delves more into what makes the more prominent figures tick who in many ways help to shape the industry and are not worried about sticking their heads above the parapet!

When the editorial team decided to highlight our Women in Wind we wanted to make it even more personal so you will find a very mixed variety of articles as well as a mix of Qs/As throughput the rest of this substantial feature.

Interview with Tammy Fisher...

YOUR OPINION ON THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE WIND INDUSTRY? I feel that a woman’s role in the wind industry is the same as a male role. The difference is in the numbers, as not many women are aware that there are jobs offshore available.

With the few women working in wind farming I feel they have to continuously prove that they’re capable and as able as a male worker. With wind farming being a male dominated industry it can be hard to get a job out there.

There are a growing number of companies out there who open their doors to male and female workers in the office and offshore. I am grateful to Tidal Transit for giving me the opportunity.

The first of which is a young lady whom we met some time ago in East Anglia working for the very successful company Tidal Transit – we knew then that at some time in the future there would be a very good reason to bring Tammy to the attention of the rest of the industry as a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication

DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO

I crew on a transfer boat working for Tidal Transit. Working on the boat there’s 1 Skipper and 2 Crew. Between me and the

Just a few more questions…

DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY We start the day by checking the vessels engines, tidiness and safety equipment.

When the passengers arrive I show them our safety brief. I offer them a bacon sandwich and drink. When the boat’s leaving port we tidy the ropes away. When in transit we keep an eye on the passengers ensuring they’re happy and find out what they have planned for the day.

other crew we share the responsibilities of passenger care, transfer from the boat to turbines, boat safety and the day to day running of the boat such as ensuring the boat is ready for sea, sorting the ropes out when mooring up, maintenance and cleaning.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND

I have grown up in North Norfolk in a farming and fishing family. When I left school I continued to study a national diploma in game and wildlife. I enjoyed 2 years on a charter fishing boat which introduced me into wind farming.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR FUTURE? I would like to think that one day I will be working on my own farm with a family of my own. In the near future I see myself continuing to work for Tidal Transit gaining as much experience and life skills as possible.

Arriving at the wind farm I go to the bow and make sure the passengers have correct PPE on and complete a safe transfer up the turbine. When they’re ready to come back down I count them down the ladder when it’s safe to do so. On the way back to port we tidy the vessel ready for the next day and make sure we are all fast alongside the pontoon after refuelling.

WHAT ANNOYS YOU THE MOST? When the weather is poor and unable to work due to safety restrictions.

WHAT WAS YOUR BEST HOLIDAY? Majorca as it was my first time on a holiday abroad as an adult.

WHO WOULD YOU NOT LIKE TO BE? Somebody unable to work.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN? Don’t fall in!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SMELL? Fresh rain in the air.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

I like to volunteer at a horse yard when not working my spaniels.

WHAT 3 WORDS WOULD BEST DESCRIBE YOU?

Motivated, reliable and talkative!

WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE 10 YEARS FROM NOW?

I would like to be working on my own farm somewhere in the UK.
