TRAINING CONSIDERATIONS

In a battlefield environment,

the training of the drivers in how to look for hazards is very important. Tey are taught how to look for IEDs as well as road hazards that might cause rollovers and how to evacuate in the event of an accident. The training of bus drivers is just as important for almost the exact same reasons. They are taught how to watch for road conditions and special considerations for railroad crossings, but they also are taught emergency proce- dures on how to evacuate the bus safely in the event of an emergency. State and federal guidance for training is always

passed down, and the local transportation administrations and shop staffs provide the best support possible to main- tain safety standards. It is always amazing to see the success of an organization when so many come together in a highly orchestrated and synchronized effort in order to produce positive outcomes. Working with the military mechanics and contract vendors overseas was a very rewarding experience. I look forward to continuing that experience within the school bus transpor- tation community as well. The bus mechanics and

administrations at both the local and state levels carry the same overall goal as that of the military. They both want to produce the safest product and service possible for the passen- gers they transport. 
