confi dence that Catherine Stimpson shares with the hors- es at Rosney Stables. She is so comfortable with these large, strong animals it’s easy to see she has been working with them for a long time. Her rela- tionship with them is so special that she makes her home in part of the stable to be close to her horses.

Stimpson began riding

horses as a baby, sitting on her mother’s lap. She played in sta- bles, participated in pony club, and began fox hunting at the age of six. She recently bought

back her fi rst horse—one she had when she was eight years old. That horse, named Mag- gie, happily grazes and greets Stimpson as we come into one of the paddocks. It is more than a pocket full of mints that makes this horse and the oth- ers come over to visit us. With- in moments, she is surrounded by horses eager for pats, greet- ings, and a mint. The horses are calm and Stimpson is tender with them. She introduces them all by name. “Each horse needs rid- ing one hour per day, six days a week.” Simpson informs me.

She cares for them, exercises them and seems to have a con- nection with each individual. We come around

high thoroughbreds. They look identical. Stimpson tells how even friends who have ridden with her for years still can’t tell them apart. Dagwood, in particular, seems to know he is special, and carries himself with pride. Stimpson owns oth- er horses and admits to having diffi culty selling them. “They like it here too much.” A year ago, Stimpson com- pleted construction on the new stables, and began run- ning her own business of train- ing and boarding horses. The stables include 14 stalls as well as two heated wash stalls, tack rooms, and facilities for laun- dry. These are situated on one hundred and eighty acres with

large paddocks almost entirely board-fenced. With miles of trails at easy access and small

cross-country jumps on the premises, it seems like heaven for horses.
