which act like additional filters creating an extra barrier against the finest particles. As a result, the water is crystal quality. ClearPro approaches DE filter clarity with sand filter functionality.

AQUA-SOL SYSTEM OFFERS 100% BACKWASH CYCLE

Conventional filters find it difficult to provide a 100% backwash cycle. Aqua-Sol Engineering’s Patented ‘Cyclonic’ Action Media Filters are aimed at the commercial market where specifiers are looking for better water quality and cost effective systems. The V.V.F. guarantee 100% backwash cycle without the aid of air scour, most conventional filter manufacturers maintain a filter should have a sand media change every two to four years, why? Because the media is becoming contaminated with body fats, hair and the usual debris of a swimming pool and therefore the filter has not functioned 100% for some time. Where the V.V.F. filter does not need sand changes as long as backwashes have been carried out in accordance, this reduces the cost of the filter over its life span dramatically.

V.V.F. are made with stainless steel to guarantee long life. There could be 20 – 50 tonnes of sand to be handled in some cases, also these filters use concrete to support the laterals. This concrete will eventually corrode the mild steel in time and reduce the thickness of the vessel caused by corrosion.

So the V.V.F. is the new commercial filter V.V.F. stands for Variable Velocity Filter where conventional filters are said to perform at their best at 25m³/m²/hr the V.V.F. performs at a rate from 6m³/m²/hr to 60m³/m²/hr without significant difference in water quality without the use of flocculants.

HYDROSPIN FROM ASTRAL BOOSTS ENERGY SAVINGS

The energy efficient Atlas from the Astral Pool Signature range is an important addition to the Hydrospin pre-filter (above right) which assists standard pool filters in energy saving. The Hydrospin features 24 involute hydro cyclones in parallel and has a 40% extra capacity for solids with thickening/clarification. The system also enables 50% savings on water consumption when back washing and comes with a floor mounted base as standard plus an optional wall mounting kit. Astra Pool advise that the Hydrospin should always be installed between the pump and the filter.

Astral Pool also offers a selection of cartridge

filters – starting with the Terra 50 through to a Terra 150 covering a filtration surface from 4.7m

sq. to 14m sq. The cylindrical cartridge filter covers a surface of 2.3m sq. There is also a cylindrical double cartridge filter covering a surface on 4.6m sq. Finally there is the AstralPool cylindrical filter with an in-built pump, which also covers a 2.3m sq surface.

LATEST TECHNOLOGY DRIVES FILTER RANGE

The Waterco Deep Bed SMDD commercial bobbin wound filter range available from Golden Coast include the latest in fibreglass winding technology, with the SMDD commercial unit designed with filter bed depths of 1.2m to provide in-depth filtration and increased dirt capacity.

The filtration vessels consist of an inner fibreglass shell, reinforced with polyester resin, which in turn is over- wound with a continuous fibreglass filament to produce a smooth aesthetically pleasing finish. To improve the water flow throughout the filter bed, the units can be supplied with either the nozzle plate or ‘Fish Tail’ lateral arrangement of under drain design to eliminate ‘dead leg’ areas. Available in 2.5bar, 4bar, 6bar and 8bar working pressures there are nine sizes, ranging from 750(30") up to 2500(98"), which come complete with a sight glass, side hatch and lifting eye as standard.

The domestic Multi-Cyclone is used as a pre- filter attached in-line between a standard pump and the main sand or cartridge filter. It is operated by the passing water powering 16 multiple hydro cyclones to generate a strong centrifugal effect to create a vortex effect which cause the solids present in the water to drop out and be collected in the clear sediment bowl. spn

ZEOCLERE FILTER MEDIA WINS WORLDWIDE FANS

Zeoclere granular filter media continues to win worldwide recognition. One of MSI’s growing number of export customers is Midwestern pool company Custom Pools in Minnesota in the United States. They have been in business since 1968 and focus on residential pool installation and service combined with their busy retail store. Custom Pools’ owner Ginny Mulvaney said: “Minnesota has a four to five month swimming season and it is important to us that there is clean, clear water for our customers, so there is no ‘down’ time for their pools. Zeoclere 30 has undoubtedly helped Custom Pools achieve that goal.” Custom Pools had used several mineral products as an alternative to the sand media. There are many ‘ZEO’ products available and in the early days they tried three different ones with no success. Ginny again: “Five years ago we came across Zeoclere 30 with the help of a long

time friend and we have never looked back. The difference in quality is unmistakable. The zeolites that we had tried previously became mushy and green after a season and showed zero ammonia removal. Zeoclere 30 however remains still operational after years. We also use MSI’s Jolly Gel flocculent and this gives customers an added polish to the water they were not expecting.”
