Developed by the Harris County Housing Authority and managed by Hettig, this seniors-only community was developed with energy efficiency and conservation in mind and is LEED Platinum cer- tified. All units feature Energy Star appliances, and enhanced recycled cellulose insulation promotes maximum energy efficiency – two of the buildings have achieved net zero energy usage. The community boasts reduced monthly utility bills using 80 percent less water and 35 percent less energy than the average apartment. Other eco- friendly elements include certified green cabinetry, flooring and carpeting in units, as well as a property- wide water reclamation system, native and drought- tolerant grasses and plants and rooftop solar panels. With a cozy 88 units, Cypresswood Estates pro-


motes an active adult lifestyle with its two walking trails, bicycle storage, a saltwater pool and an out- door basketball court. Residents also enjoy on-site health screening services, nutrition and cooking activities, counseling services, safety seminars and employment assistance. Additional amenities designed especially for seniors include an on-site hair salon/barbershop, a coffee shop and the low-impact fitness center and computer room with oversized, user-friendly keyboards and monitors.
