hen I think about why I practice yoga, lyrics from one of my favorite artists, Madonna, come to mind. The lyrics are so sexy and sensual, and yet ring true to my heart, literally.

I began practicing yoga, like most, for the physical benefits. I wanted to feel comfortable in my own skin. However, over the years, my practice and teaching style have transformed into a Vinyasa flow aimed at shedding the layers that cover your heart, aiming to reach deeper and deeper to your higher Self.

The heart is the “seat of the soul” according to yoga philosophy. Our true Self, a bright light connected to all other beings of light, resides physically in the heart.

Yoga provides us with the tools to remove the layers of uncertainty and negativity surrounding our heart. Yogis are acting as Michelangelo, who famously explained that his goal was to chip away at the rock surrounding the existing sculpture that resided in the large marble pillar of stone. The sculpture is already living in the stone, he explained. His task was to remove the impurities around the existing sculpture and bring it to the light of day.

Indeed, a yogi is a sculptor. After practicing asana, pranayama, yamas, and niyamas, and meditation, over and over, year after year, we are going deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole. We are getting closer and closer to hearing the voice of our higher Self, the voice of the Self that is connected to all other beings and thus a higher source of energy.

Once you hear your higher Self speak, there is no turning back. You will hear your Self speak to you more and more, until that is all you hear. The “citta vritti” or “turnings of the mind” will no longer exist. You will only hear the voice of the heart. Only the voice of the heart is real. The voice of the mind is of attachment, desire, and ego.

There are so many questions that we face every day. Who to love, where to work, what to wear, how to respond to an email or a tweet. Now I know that my heart has all the answers. The more I practice, the more I can tune into the signals my heart sends me. As I flow through my yoga practice, both on and off the mat, I go deeper and deeper inside, and burn through all the layers of illusion, doubt, fear, and anxiety that cover my heart.

Now I am finding that my mind is spinning less. Fear is in the past. Love is all there is. My heart provides me with all the answers I need, and my mind stays quietly in the background. All of the answers are truly within. We just have to listen.
