Birmingham City Council (BCC) and DC Leisure have launched the new £12.2m Harborne Pool and Fitness Centre, which has been devel- oped on the site of the city’s former Harborne Baths. Te facility is the first new


public swimming pool built in Birmingham for more than 20 years. Wates Construction delivered the new venue and architects Saunders Boston were behind the design. Harborne Pool and Fitness


Centre boasts a 25m, six-lane swimming pool and a learner pool – in addition to a 70-sta- tion adult fitness suite that has been equipped by Pulse, PowerPlate and Trixter. Facilities also include a large dance and aero-


bics studio and a smaller gym for young people aged between eight- and 16-years old. An offi- cial opening is planned for 28 January.


NGB opposes Handball Arena name change


British Handball has announced the launch of a campaign to retain the name of London’s Olympic Handball Arena, following a decision to rebrand it as Te Copper Box. Te 7,000-seat arena has been given


the new name to reflect the materials used in its creation, but the national governing body said it could hinder the sport’s ‘continued growth’. British Handball chief executive

GLL launches new budget gym


Leisure trust GLL has opened its first stand- alone budget gym in Bexleyheath, London. Gym Bexleyheath houses 92 pieces of the


Technogym cardiovascular and resistance equipment, a dedicated free weights and stretch area, plus modern changing facilities. In order to keep costs to a minimum the


reception area is self-service – although the gym will be staffed at all times. Te cost of membership has been set at £19.95 a month. GLL initially entered the budget club sector


with its Gym-London brand in 2008 but so far the concept has worked mainly as an option for members to gain limited, gym-only access at full-service centres operated by GLL.
