In this day of social media, we are constantly sharing information. In this spirit, we hope to continue to build the Michigan Music Educator as a publication where music educators come together to share ideas. One of the challenges of being a music educator is feeling isolated. Let us look to this journal to provide a gathering place for our community.

We have many great music educators in the state of Michigan. Having taught at the public school and university levels in several states, I can say, without reservation, that our state is the home to many of our nation’s most outstanding music educators. Sharing the ideas of this group of professionals will continue to be the primary goal of the Michigan Music Educator.

We want to make sure that the Michigan Music Educator serves as a point of connection for all music educators. To do so, we need everyone’s input. I invite each of you to consider what you have to offer your colleagues. If you have ever read an article in a music education journal or been in the audience for a conference presentation and thought, “I could do that,” then we welcome your submission. If you aren’t sure about a topic you have in mind, please contact me to discuss your thoughts.

This issue contains a number of articles that are both practical and forward thinking. Every article address ways that we can encourage musical growth in our students. I had the honor of being the student of the late Eunice Boardman. A class or conversation in her office never went by without her posing any number of “If…, then…” questions. As we read articles in this and other professional journals, we should always ask ourselves if what I am reading then how might it inform my teaching.

Our collective professional growth is critical to the success of music education. It is especially important as we all continue to feel pressure placed on music education and music educators in the current climate. Let us work together to ensure the very best music education for everyone in our state. The Michigan Music Educator can be used to support the effort by providing the best possible professional information music learning and teaching.

I wish to close by asking you to join me in a collective “round of applause” to thank Barbara O’Hagin for the outstanding work she did as editor of the Michigan Music Educator. It is my goal, and the goal of the editorial board, to build on the work she has done.
