their business and Loyal Grove has just completed a major project at The Manor Hotel pool at Oakhampton in Devon.

Geoff Turner, the General Manager is convinced that leisure centres and commercial pools have to invest in making pools more attractive to young people to generate more income. “We do find at the moment that it’s the children who find out where the best slides and the best fun in a pool is to be found. And yes they will make sure their parents drive them to the best facilities. Distance doesn’t seem to be a problem when it comes to a pool which has great slides.” All new water slide installations from Loyal Grove are designed in accordance with current Standards (BS EN 1069 part 1) and manufactured and installed to the appropriate British Standards. In addition the company are continuing to develop and expand a varied range of children’s play features suitable for municipal swimming pool environments and wet leisure areas.

“Within our standard range of play features we have an assortment of toddler slides, interactive play features, water cannons, tipping cones, water jets and sprays to name a few. We also work closely with clients to design and manufacture bespoke features using the latest 2D/3D CAD and visualisation software in the process.” The swimming pool specialist market is not subject to independent inspection or bound by compulsory manufacturing standards , but most manufactures apply the same sort of rigid standards which are in pace for the outdoor play industry and its links with Association of Play Industries. Guidelines for best practice are available from the HSE, ISRM, ILAM, and PWTAG supplying recommendations for pool operators and highlighting the hazards and perils surrounding fixed and free floating products. Several safety solutions to existing water features are available such as non-slip flooring, impact absorbing safety surfaces and foam padding and

cladding. All of which can be customised to suit demand and, in most cases, themed or coloured to blend in with the existing surround.

Jo Coveney at Airquee said the company is one of the leading manufacturers of castles, pool inflatables, aqua runs, obstacle courses, swimming pool obstacle courses, and slides. Top of the ‘fun rating’ is the Aquaruns which offer kids the chance to chase along elaborate game-like extended pool floats with in-built obstacles, challenges and diversions. “The inflatables are very colourful and great fun and once the kids get the chance to use them we find they are great crowd pleasers. It’s a good strong market – commercial pools are certainly looking for more ways of attracting families in. I think they feel now they need that something extra – more than just swimming.” Yorkshire based Bee-Tee say there is little reluctance from local authorities to invest in the right sort of pool toys.

“Many pool

managers fear that if they don’t keep on

investing and hyping up swimming pools as places of fun and not just of exercise then attendances will drop”
