SPN JUN 2011 EnergySavings CASE STUDY By restricting

the loss of heat through the walls, the panels act as a thermal break – keeping heat in

POOL OWNER ‘THRILLED’ WITH ENERGY SAVINGS

Heat retaining panels offer staggeringly high energy savings for new pool owners. The Endless Summer Heatwave pool has had rave reviews since launching last year. New pool owner Susannah Schofield gave a glowing testimony to the energy savings she was able to make. “Our pool has met and surpassed our expectations,” says the very happy Susannah Schofield. Her new pool exceeded her energy expectations when it was installed by Horsham’s Home Counties Swimming Pools at her home in Sevenoaks, Kent.

The new pool was a Heatwave special heat retaining pool from Certikin.

“I am nothing but delighted with it. Even in the cold weather when I turn the boiler off, the temperature hardly changes at all which means I have no excuse not to exercise if the weather quickly improves!”

reduced. This saves both electricity and chemical costs because chemical dosing and control is linked directly to pump speed. IWEMS can even be used to manage UV treatment systems, creating further savings in both energy and maintenance, by prolonging lamp life. “When pools are designed, the pumps are specified to provide sufficient turnover of water to cope with the maximum number of bathers that the pool can accommodate,” explained

Powermaster says its IWEMS system will reduce electricity consumption and chemical costs by up to 70%

This is due to the Heatwave’s heat retaining panels which offer high energy savings. Two models are available, a standard and a deluxe. The latter offers the ultimate in heat retention and the highest U values of any pool on the market. The patented thermal insulated panels are designed to trap heat in the pool and keep the surrounding cold out. By restricting the loss of heat through the walls, the panels act as a thermal break – keeping more heat in and preventing the outside ground temperature extracting heat from the pool water, resulting in dramatic energy savings and sustained warm water.

Even the installation of the pool was easy, says Home Counties’ Peter Burkitt. In fact, the actual panels themselves took just hours to erect, thanks to the ingenious interlocking wall panel system and the pool was finished up to copings in eight days flat. Heatwave reduces the size of the excavation required; saving valuable time and money on backfilling, and each panel is pre- plumbed with Certikin flow fittings. Susannah adds: “We are so thrilled with our new pool.”

Peter Burkitt has the last word: “This was the first Heatwave Home Counties has installed and it certainly won’t be the last. In these energy saving times, it is one that I would not hesitate to recommend.”

Geoff Ranshaw, one of Powermaster’s directors. “Our vision is to integrate the control of pool pump speed properly with the monitoring and management of water quality, so as to maximise the opportunity for energy savings. Put simply, we make your energy spend relative to the amount of people in your pool!”

In Northern Ireland and Scotland, Powermaster’s IWEMS range is listed in the Carbon Trust Loan Scheme. As a result, when taking part in the scheme, organisations can benefit from 0% business loans of £3,000 - £100,000 to cover the purchase cost. It’s quite common for the energy savings alone to cover the capital cost of the equipment during the course of the loan. From April this year the equivalent scheme in the United Kingdom is now managed by the Carbon Trust and Siemens Financial Services.

HEAT PUMPS STILL THE FOCUS OF ATTENTION

Heat pumps remain high on the agenda for such savings.

The Gemini system from Heatstar is a response to increasing the sort of fuel prices now being

felt, and the escalating focus and demand for sources of renewable energy.

The Gemini provides all the usual energy efficiencies associated with a heat pump dehumidification system with heat reclaim available to both air and pool water. It incorporates a built-in fresh air source heat pump boiler, which extracts energy from the outside air and uses this to heat the pool room air and pool water directly.

The combined Gemini hybrid provides the end client with an easy and convenient solution to the desire to accommodate renewable energy technology, without the need or high associated costs of installing a ground source heat pump boiler or externally positioned air source heat pump boilers.

As the Gemini air source heat pump places the energy directly into the pool room air and pool water, it is capable of achieving much higher operating efficiencies when compared to a separate external heat pump which can only provide indirect heating via a central heating pipe circuit. To make installation as easy for the trade as possible, the installation requirements and services for the Gemini are exactly the same as for a standard indoor pool climate control unit. Certikin has also raised the bar with the new 29 range of Calorex pool heat pumps. Produced in Europe to ISO9001-2001 standards, the 629 and 829 models lead the industry in both performance and efficiency.

The 29 range offers proven coefficient of performance (COP) of up to 5:1. This means the heat pumps can provide up to five units of energy for the pool for every one unit paid-for while at the same time, drastically reducing carbon emissions. spn
