THMA (Team Humber Marine Alliance)

The UK’s East Coast will be Europe’s number one centre for offshore wind development. With Round 2 & 3 projects planned this presents real opportunities for marine engineering companies clustered around key port locations.

Jim Teasdale, chief executive of Mersey Maritime Group said: “Mersey Maritime is delighted to have been given the opportunity to work with partners in order to match existing expertise with potential business activity to support UK wind energy development.”

“THE ANSWER’S YES, NOW WHAT’S THE QUESTION?”

Already in the Humber area regional businesses are winning contracts in the offshore wind market. Siemens have established an operations & maintenance base at the Port of Grimsby East, Cosalt have entered into a joint venture with Danish operations & maintenance provider Apro and a whole cluster of SMEs such as Wind Power Support, G8Way, Renewables Network etc, taking first mover advantage have developed around the Humber region.

These developments don’t even take into account the planned Able UK port development and the potential to further upgrade the Humber’s port infrastructure. These developments are tailored to attract a major wind turbine manufacturer; attracted not only by the port infrastructure but the surrounding marine engineering supply chain.

Evolving 17 years ago Team Humber Marine Alliance represents 100 marine engineering companies located on the North and South bank of the Humber. We believe that by working as a group, sharing knowledge, expertise and manpower we are better able to promote

our region and win business for our members. This is particularly so in the offshore wind sector where the ability to scale up rapidly and meet ever changing demands is crucial. Our region’s entrepreneurial spirit has proven that small businesses are able to collaborate and attract major offshore wind players.

Going forward, our key is to continue building on current momentum. There is a real buzz around the Humber; local business understands the needs of the offshore wind sector and we view it as our key opportunity. As Port of Grimsby East’s Marine Operations Manager, Roger Smith, says “the answer’s yes, now what’s the question?” This positive attitude has allowed the Humber to consistently “punch above its weight” and develop an operations & maintenance hub around the Grimsby port complex.

It is my belief that whilst the North East region has received vast sums of financial support from the previous government, the Humber region has developed the sector on the back of sound commercial principles and this places us in the best position to take advantage of future developments. In the Humber offshore wind is already a profitable, sustainable industry and developers are investing in an area with a broad supply chain infrastructure and a real enthusiasm to make things happen.

Within this mix Team Humber Marine Alliance continues to play a role supporting the Humber regions SMEs to take full advantage of the opportunities offshore wind presents.
