Communication WHERE WOULD WE BE...

“You may have the necessary skills and the disposition to tackle your specific area of expertise but if you cannot communicate effectively you will fail.”

Fairly strong words, but good advice, which I have learned and recognised over too many years to remember.

When researching the wind energy industry it became apparent that when a particular organisation or professional association in another part of the country was mentioned, invariably it had either not been recognised, or had only vaguely been heard of.

It is vital in any industry for companies and organisations to communicate with each other but in an industry so new it is absolutely paramount.

We therefore thought that we would feature, within this article, information regarding some of our organisations and associations who serve the professional needs of the industry. We have also included their contact details so that they

can contact each other and in doing so communicate in the best interests of the industry as a whole.

Each organisation has taken the time to explain their aims and aspirations. They are not featured in any particular order.

WHOWE ARE The Liverpool City Region has long been acknowledged as a centre for maritime excellence, with a breadth and diversity of marine activity that is unrivalled anywhere else outside of London. The formation of Mersey Maritime in 2003 drew these fragmented interests together for the first time under a tested ‘cluster organisation’ model, providing a strong representative voice and a high profile presence for the sector that extends far beyond the region’s geographical boundaries.

WHATWE DO Seven years in, Mersey Maritime represents the interests of a cluster numbering 1000 businesses, and 26,000 employees, with an annual contribution to

the economy of £2.5bn*. A significant proportion of these companies are either already active in the supply of products or services to the wind energy market, or have the potential to develop their business in this direction. Mersey Maritime’s role on behalf of its private sector members is to establish the collective capability that exists on Merseyside in this respect and help secure a slice of the UK wind energy market for Merseyside companies. A meeting of private sector partners was held on 9 September 2010 to explore how best to do this.

HOWWEWORK As a successful private-public sector partnership, Mersey Maritime aligns its activity with that of public sector partners including Envirolink Northwest and The Mersey Partnership. Working together in this way, the Liverpool City Region is committed to fully exploiting the opportunities the Round 3 wind energy developments off the Northwest coast will create. Developing a low carbon economy is one of four Transformational Actions that the City Region has identified to make a step-change in its economic performance over the next twenty years. The City Region is already establishing a leading presence in key renewable energy sectors such as tidal energy, fuel cells and smartgrids. It also has a significant commercial infrastructure supporting existing wind turbine developments on land and near offshore.
