PUMPS

HEAT

PERFECT TIMING

WITH NEW LEGISLATION LIKELY TO AFFECT ALL UK CONSUMERS JUST AROUND THE CORNER THERE IS AN EVEN GREATER NEED TO USE RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY. HEAT PUMP TECHNOLOGY CONTINUES TO FLY THE FLAG FOR CONSERVATION ISSUES IN THE SPECIALIST POOL INDUSTRY WITH MORE ADVANCED MACHINES AND HIGHER TEMPERATURES BEING AVAILABLE. MORE UNIT SALES ARE BRINGING DOWN COSTS AND WHEN YOU ADD IN INCREASED CONSUMER AWARENESS, THEN IT’S CLEAR THE HEAT PUMP MARKET IS ONE OF THE MOST COMPETITIVE THERE IS

I

t’s official. Heat pumps are the number one pool heating method in the UK and growing dramatically. Sales of the products and wider applications into other areas of heating are benefitting from the double pressure on consumers of rising carbon fuel costs and Government demands to find environmentally better alternatives.

Carbon awareness has always encouraged heat pump sales as

they have clear lower emissions than other fuels. Yet it’s a market which has changed dramatically over the last two years for other reasons. More demand, more applications have led to better, more efficient pumps offering higher and more consistent temperatures. Increased sales have also lowered prices making the decision for the pool owner to buy even easier.

Legislation is now under way

“Anyone currently involved in the sale and distribution of swimming pool heat pumps should be aware of the significant implication of this pending scheme and make contingency plans”

that will demand lower heat losses and higher heating system efficiencies on all newly built UK properties and any existing properties that fall under building regulations for refurbishment. From the beginning of this year many new properties will require, by law, a degree of recognised renewable heating – a regulation which many are taking to include domestic dwellings that contain swimming pools.

So this then is the background of change for the heat pumps market in the coming years – keeping up with increase in demand yet meeting the Government’s increasing desire for high energy efficiency standards. Ironically, the greater demand for the products has come on the back of environmental concerns. Yet the market also faces new products from the Far East and China as well as new brands working hard to establish themselves from Europe. They all know the market is expanding but they also know

consumers are demanding lower prices and improved

performances. The UK market probably benefits from the best products, best technology and best service systems for heat pumps in Europe if not the world. There’s choice but there’s quality and the back up service remains a key selling point for everyone in the market.

Heatstar remains a name which is synonymous with a commitment to energy efficiency through heat pump innovation. It was one of the first companies in the UK to design and manufacture heat pumps. Heatstar’s founder Tony Andrews, father of present Heatstar director Jackie Scott, designed one of the first heat pumps for the pool market in the early 1970s and set up Heatstar to manufacture units commercially in 1980. It was a different, more cynical market then but one which was always going to change dramatically. Heatstar’s Gemini Climate
