Platform for Metalcasters AFS has developed and launched a web-based platform

I’m very satisfi ed with

my long-term print advertis- ing program in MCDP—it’s the only advertising I do. It gives me great visibility and name recognition, both with existing customers and with new ones. And the steady fl ow of new business it brings in easily justifi es the investment.

for metalcasters to compare their facilities’ demographics and performance against other similar, anonymous facilities in North America. T e Metalcaster Benchmarker is an update to the Operational Cost Survey that AFS has conducted in past years. With the help of several industry-leading metalcasters, the previous survey was redeveloped into a web-based platform that off ers more data and report generation for more compre- hensive comparisons. Participation in the survey is free to all, and Corporate Member participants will have free access to the fi nal results (others must pay for access; discounts are given to participants). T is new survey will generate reports to provide comparison data (by metal, process and size) for profi t and productivity in the industry. Also part of the Metalcaster Benchmarker is the 2014 North

American Industry Census. Based on data collected annually for the AFS directory of metalcasters, this census provides a macro- level view of the metalcasting industry. Corporate Members have free access to this system whenever they want data on the most widely used molding and melting processes, production data and employee counts. To take the survey, visit www.afsinc.org/benchmarker.

New Instructor Certifi cation Program Launched

As part of the AFS Institute’s $1 million pledge to the

metalcasting industry to raise course content quality, AFS has launched an Instructor Certifi cation program. T e new program supplements the Institute’s redevelopment eff orts which has included new courses rolled out each quarter over the last year. T e new certifi cation program will help instructors cul- tivate their own teaching skills for use inside the classroom. In addition to having technical knowledge in their areas of expertise, instructors in the new certifi cation program will receive education to develop teaching skills and help imple- ment the facilitation of teaching principles. To become certifi ed, applicants must participate in Train-

the-Trainer coursework and teach at least one course module to demonstrate an ability to implement the skills taught. After certifi cation is granted, coaching and feedback is pro- vided to all instructors regularly, then minimum evaluation scores are required at the end of each certifi cation cycle to continue teaching for the Institute. A number of instructors already have been certifi ed

through the program, and others are in progress now. Ultimately, students of Institute courses are the ones

who will benefi t from this program. Eff ective instructors will result in high quality learning experiences, which allow students greater opportunity to achieve learning outcomes and transfer that learning to the workplace.
