THE ANDROID MICROCONSOLE once shook the gaming world when it appeared out of nowhere on Kickstarter to raise $8.5m in 30 days, smashing its goal of $950,000.

Ouya later raised $15m in funding to build the console, and attracted as many as 10,000 developers early on interested in releasing content for the system. Though it hasn’t quite shaken the market as many thought it would, Ouya still hopes to make its mark after ditching the free demo requirement and creating Ouya Everywhere, making games playable on the TV even without the microconsole.

THE TECH LIST

THOUGH INITIALLY RELEASED as a paid-for product, last year the HTML5 Turbulenz engine was made open-source and free. Developers using it are free to modify the tool, self-publish and monetise their 2D and 3D games online. Like most engines, Turbulenz features a series of rendering and particle effects and physics, collision and animation systems, including a large collection of built-in animation controllers. Ideal for browser game development, the tech has been used to develop titles including Denki Word Quest, Polycraft and Space Ark.
