develop 100 FOREWORD

The challenges that lay ahead for developers not only concern the need to provide a great user experience for its customers, but in trying to adapt and recognise where and how their software and hardware will fit into and interact in the whole digital scheme of things. This requires an

understanding of all the digital entertainment industries. That means talking about QA in Film and TV. Digital TV and Content Distribution. Hardware testing and Certification. Think those have nothing to do with games development? Think again. Like any QA firm worth its salt, Testronic understands that the various business lines within the digital entertainment and business spheres are converging rapidly. Offering just one service no longer cuts the mustard. It is blinkered thinking to believe that all a test partner needs to provide games development is Loc QA or the current set of games testing available. We have been lucky to have come into the gaming world from a wider entertainment field.

We started out back in the days of antiquity, testing VHS. Years later, we now serve the entire digital software and hardware realm, from classroom to content distribution.

THE TECH LIST

Consoles are about more than games now, changing the dynamic with users

So why does a developer and its QA partner need to take into account all the other business lines it previously did not have to think about? Because, quite simply, that’s the way it’s going. Consoles are no longer just for gameplay; many console owners don’t even use their machines for gaming; and titles are no longer just played on consoles; now a single game experience can be accessed on various devices wherever the player is. Gamers have much greater requirements than before. They need to make purchases or access and share whatever they’re doing with their social network. QAing that requires a greater knowledge of the digital world than just stand alone games testing. The business lines have converged and we need to

pay attention. For instance, in the build up to the release of Xbox One, we tested the devices, not for a games developer, but for a major European digital television station against their set-top boxes. What does this mean? Companies from entirely different fields, with wholly different products need their babies to play together without any tears. That is where QA is going to most definitely play a major part in future development and co-operation. It is a joy for us to be part of the whole ‘game’ and to be involved in this latest Develop 100; we’d like to raise a glass to the pioneers out there as they embark on this journey to new worlds. You might not know it, but we’re with you all the way, clearing the path ahead of you.
