Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Nigel Campbell, Chief Executive Officer at Mercury Holdings Ltd.

What was your first job? My fi rst real job was as a


Sales Rep for BRITA in the UK. The company was fairly new here and I was fortunate to join at the right time. After four years in the UK, I moved to Australia with BRITA and then on to Germany where the HQ was located. I only left the company earlier this year, and spent the last few years as a Board member and Managing Director of BRITA Home. A great journey!

How did you get into the cleaning industry?


After many years living overseas, my family and I decided to return to our home in Jersey where I have taken up the reins at Mercury. It’s a 50-year- old business with fi ve divisions, and is involved in many areas of island life. It’s the market leader for janitorial products on the Channel Islands.


Which three words describe your personality?


Integrity, Passionate, Challenging.


If you could visit one place in the world, where


would you go and why? My previous role at BRITA meant that I was lucky enough to travel the world and one country I spent

How would you improve the cleaning industry?


The industry is still new to me, but one of the challenges I see is the need for a strong focus on formal training within the industry, especially with the high turnover of staff.

If an intern were to start tomorrow, what’s the


one piece of advice you would give them? Make sure that you have experienced some of what the world has to offer before you settle into a career.


What do you do to unwind? Living in Jersey means that


you are surrounded by some of the


best beaches in Europe. Whether its paddle boarding during the summer or walking along St Ouens beach with the family during the winter, it is easy to put things into perspective.

If you were stranded on a desert island and you


could only have one thing, what would it be and why? Many years ago, I read Brian Keenan’s ‘An Evil Cradling’. No matter how many times I read it, I always put it down refreshed in the spirit of man.

What do you think is the future of the


cleaning industry? It has to be a further focus on sustainable products for the industry. Less packaging, waste, transportation – it makes sense on so many levels.

Cost effectiveness or personal service? Which


is more important and is it possible to do both? It is essential to strive for both, and I don’t see it as an ‘either/or’ situation. Value is the balance between both.
