Onfido Ltd, the UK's fastest growing background-check company, tell Tomorrow’s Cleaning about the importance of checking a cleaner’s right to work in the UK.

Common sense may tell you that the decision to perform a background check on your cleaner may simply be down to the premises on which they work. After all, it's common knowledge that it is necessary to perform an enhanced DBS check and a CRB check to be allowed to clean in schools, care homes and hospitals.

However, recent government proposals will mean that those employing cleaners will have a greater incentive to zoom out on their focus this year, and look harder at the most fundamental aspect of where their cleaners are working: the UK itself.

40 | FEATURE A Right To Work:

A Crucial Check Before the introduction of the new Immigration Bill, Immigration Minister, Mark Harpur, commented on how the growth of a shadow economy for illegal migrants cannot be allowed to continue. To combat this, it was proposed that far tougher measures should be taken and harsher charges should be laid against those employers who exploit illegal labour.

This message seems to have been carried out, with the Immigration Bill subsequently detailing how the government plans to get tough on

employers who hire illegal workers. It’s estimated that there are over 860,000 illegal migrant workers in the UK; in the vast majority of cases, employers are unknowingly hiring these workers, so the government has recently focused on attempting to educate firms about the extent of the problem and the potential dangers. The Home Office consultation document entitled ‘Strengthening and Simplifying the Civil Penalty Scheme to Prevent Illegal Working’, set out the basic steps the government intends to take over the coming months.
