New Year’s Resolutions

Paul Halliwell, Sales Director at Disposables UK, talks about the company’s aims and ambitions for 2014, and discusses what promises the industry should be sticking to in the New Year.

For us, 2013 was a pivotal year which saw us embark on our ambitious five year growth plans, including a move to larger premises and an investment of £1.7million in new machinery. The move allowed us to streamline our processes, bring about a faster turnaround time on producing and delivering goods and improve our customer service — something that is very important to us as a company.

We also saw great sales successes across our brands. We enjoyed continued growth on our Bay West brand, achieving double-digit growth figures for the past three years, and also celebrated our Optimum brand. Optimum Professional, our volume commodity range, has achieved major successes in winning new business, as well as the launch of two new sub-brands: Optimum ProWipers and OptiSilk. Optimum ProWipers generated a 65% increase in sales

of non-woven products, and in 2014, we will be aiming to take a stronger market share within the sector.

As well as enjoying operating on a national basis with our portfolio of brands, we also place significant importance on promoting ourselves in the region. One of our local successes includes being crowned Business of the Year at the Huddersfield Examiner Business Awards 2013, last November. Being recognised in our local region was significant for us as we are proud of our Yorkshire roots.

Trevor Storer, who sadly passed away in 2010, set up the company with his wife, Diane, in 1987. Originally operating from a small office in Milnsbridge in Huddersfield, 27 years later, we have grown into a major manufacturer and are one of the largest employers in Meltham. The award is not only a testament

to our commitment to the region, but gives much-deserved recognition to the staff’s tireless efforts to make the company what it is today. We really couldn’t have achieved what we have without our team.

So, how do we top 2013 and keep momentum going? Our New Year's resolution for 2014 is to work smarter, not harder. With the relocation of our four previous premises to one larger site, it is the first time in many years that we are all under one roof. We see this as a great opportunity to be leaner in both manufacturing and operational terms, and to be more aggressive in selling. We see 2014 and 2015 as expansion years and, with our aim to almost double turnover from £16m to £30m by 2018, the next few years will be pivotal.

This year will also see us further expand into Europe, following
