Bright Lights, Big City

Chris Clopper, CEO and Founder of Mulberry Marketing Communications, brings us a special world news report on the Las Vegas Cleaning Show, held in late November last year.

Chatting with a couple of industry contacts on the BA flight back to London after the show, our reflections on the ISSA/ INTERCLEAN® North America 2013 event were that it was the best exhibition for many years; certainly since before the global financial crisis in 2008.

The show stats offer support for this positive assessment too. Not only did ISSA/INTERCLEAN attract the most visitor registrants in nearly a decade – with 21% of visitors hailing from 78 countries outside of the United States – it also set a record for the most new exhibitors, with 143 exhibitors out of the 690 participating for the first time.

Also confirming the trend for the cleaning industry to be ever more international, it was interesting to

note that, while the majority of the exhibitors were drawn from the US of course, overall exhibitors were drawn from 29 different countries. Once again I am patriotically proud to say that this included a strong showing of UK companies.

From a visitor perspective, those that I spoke to thronging the aisles cited their desire to meet with exhibitors and find innovative products and ideas as their main reason for coming to the exhibition and the accompanying ISSA Convention Seminar programme.

So, what exactly made this year’s show the best for many years? I am somewhat biased of course (my company Mulberry consults for ISSA in EMEA), but I thought that ISSA had made some smart changes and improvements to the show format.

Definitely contributing to busier traffic was the three-day line-up of keynote speakers located right on the trade show floor. In fact, the final day of ISSA/INTERCLEAN saw a significant increase in visitors as ISSA encouraged people to stay at the event longer. For instance, more than 1,700 people attended the Keynote Stage area on the Thursday morning to watch magician and endurance artist David Blaine entertain the audience with his stories and illusions.

ISSA had also been remarkably successful in persuading many other notable industry bodies to co-locate their annual conventions alongside the ISSA/INTERCLEAN Show, including were BSCAI, IEHA, and the Association of Residential Cleaning Services International (ARCSI).
