JD Sports splashes out on Tiso and Activinstinct

JD SPORTS has paid for a ‘controlling interest’ in clothing and equipment firm Tiso Group, which also owns Alpine Bikes. Edinburgh-based Tiso Group also


includes George Fisher and Blues the Ski Shop, both of which are set to become part of JD’s Outdoor division, according to a BBC report. JD executive chairman Peter Cowgill will take over as Tiso chairman. David McCorquodale, from KPMG, was lead adviser on the sale and told the BBC: “The outdoor retail market is consolidating and scale with national coverage is an important aspect of meeting consumer needs.” He added: “To bring the Tiso brand into an ambitious larger group that can offer the full range of choice is a logical step for the Tiso family to take. “For JD Sports, there is plenty of


opportunity for further development of a business which has market leaders in Tiso, George Fisher, Alpine Bikes and Blues the Ski Shop.”


Meanwhile, JD Sports has also acquired

a majority stake in Activinstinct – an online specialist sports store. According to the Manchester Evening


News, an undisclosed sum was paid for the online retailer store, which has annual sales of £24 million of premium, technical sporting and outdoor footwear, apparel and equipment.


Bury-based JD Sports bought Blacks Leisure and Millets stores last year.


Granger’s takes on new sales director By Jonathon Harker


EDD HAMES has joined footwear, clothing and tent aftercare specialist Granger’s as sales director for Outdoor. In the role Hames will oversee the worldwide sales of Granger’s and Fabsil in the outdoor industry. According to the firm, it is currently


experiencing a significant period of change and wants to capitalise on future opportunities. As sales director Hames will undertake the management of Granger’s global distribution partners and be instrumental in brand direction and marketing for the company, ultimately driving sales and growth. Previously UK sales manager at leading


compression wear brand Skins, Edd was responsible for key accounts including Blacks, Ellis Brigham, Snow and Rock and John Lewis. Hames said: “I was really keen to work


for a truly vertically integrated company, which controlled all aspects of its business from manufacture to the retail floor. I have a background in biochemistry so I really do understand Granger’s products and feel a synergy with the brand.To be
