Rocky Mountain Construction rides into Silver Dollar City

Outlaw Run first inversion

Described by the park as “the world’s most bizarre and daring wood coaster,” Outlaw Run is certainly a ferocious beast. Silver Dollar City’s new $10 million (€8m) attraction sends passengers roaring through the Ozark Mountains on a record-breaking ride, including several world firsts. Paul Ruben is given a Run for his money in Branson, Missouri

B

uilt by Idaho-based Rocky Mountain Construction using a combination of custom- made steel RMC Topper Track with a wooden support structure, Outlaw Run opens the debate, is it wood, is it steel? Actually it’s a hybrid, one that offers a spectacular ride experience, both diabolical and smooth, so does it really matter? Breaking new ground, Outlaw Run and rides like it (see over the page) are revolutionising wooden coaster design.

It certainly feels like a wood coaster, and as such it delivers a handful of bragging rights. It becomes the world’s first and only double barrel roll on a wood coaster, all 720º of it. It has the world’s steepest wooden coaster drop, 162ft (or 49m) at 81º. It becomes the world's only wood coaster to twist upside down a record-breaking three times. With a top speed of 68mph (109kmh), it is also the second fastest wooden coaster in the world, after only El Toro at New Jersey’s Six Flags Great Adventure. Opening this spring after a year of construction, Outlaw Run proves that such extreme elements as the

double barrel roll can, in fact, be done on a wooden coaster. Brad Thomas, president of Silver Dollar City Attractions, cites these and other claims as reasons for the park choosing the ride. “With the 81º drop, the three inversions and the speed, it is full of fun and acceleration,” he says. ”No other coaster on the planet can provide the same experience.”

Authentic theming

Silver Dollar City is a theme park known for designing attractions with storylines based in real history. Outlaw Run is set amidst an authentic stagecoach depot, a place where civility is waning and outlaws may lurk. Passengers head into untamed territory where, at any minute, a wild chase could ensue. But on Outlaw Run, the good guys always win, leaving the bad guys in the dust. Located in the a new area on the west of the park, the 2,937ft-long (895m) coaster takes advantage of the natural mountain terrain, with a 107ft lift that leads to a 162ft (49m) drop into a valley. Custom- designed “stagecoach” trains take riders on a journey
